Writing The College Essay Pick up a pen and piece of paper and write them a letter. Tell them you are proud of them and concerned because they have worked hard and deserve to put their best foot forward, i.e. you want them to succeed. Let them know you are there to help, but know you wonât be next year when theyâre at school. And then have a glass of wine, go for a walk, i.e. let it go. I think that this is one of the reasons that rising seniors procrastinate writing their essay. Theyâve likely just finished a academically challenging junior year. It feels more important than the others they have written for an English class grade. college admissions, and I found my notes from the road trip I took with my daughter in 2011, the summer before she applied to college. Perhaps finances or other things restricted your ability to have the kinds of accomplishments that other students have. Thinking about those objects can pave the way for a really interesting essay. The tennis racquet may remind the student of the first racquet they received from their favorite uncle and the fun moments they shared together when the student first learned to serve. Or the garlic press may remind the teen of the time they spent cooking with their grandmother and how it became a family joke that they loved to smush the garlic in it. This is the magic bullet and everything hinges on it. Parents are often tempted to re-write or edit essays by inserting multi-syllabic words or focusing on the transition from one paragraph to the next. Include school activities; awards, honors, and offices held; community services; jobs; and travel. Note your strongest impressions and how they affected you. If you loved the Grand Canyon, for example, write down three specific reasons why, aside from the grandeur and beauty that everyone loves. Describe an accomplishment that you had to struggle to achieve. This is likely a different style of writing than students typically use in their classes. Itâs especially different than the one they have often learned to use in their AP Language and Composition class. For some kids, it can be tough to break away from that. Now, I understand you can read this one of two ways. My daughter/son just needs to be specific and basically not write a bad essay. This is why I recommend brainstorming a list of unique, fun facts or thinking about favorite objects. Often, there are anecdotes related to those things that the student can talk about in an essay, which will really give colleges a glimpse of who they are. The essay is one of the few things that youâve got complete control over in the application process, especially by the time youâre in your senior year.
